So I’m in the market for a new car at the moment and my budget is a very pathetic $3000. So I’ve been on craigslist religiously lately and this guy shows up

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I’ve been very interested in civic si’s but always thought they were out of my budget, but there are a couple things that concern me with this car

-the front bumper as you can see it looks a little out of wack, especially on the drivers side

-Also owner says it’s a newer motor in it from a rsx, due to the fact previous owner ran it dry. And he says it was done professionally but cannot find the receipt for it, also he claims clutch was done at the same time too.

-And the A/C is inop at the moment too which shouldn’t be that much a problem for me to figure out I’m into slight wrenching

So Oppo do you guys think this is something worth looking at, let alone pulling the trigger on.

I’d avoid it. You can buy a more reliable car that’s still fun for less than the $3k the seller is asking.

Here’s a Stick-shift VQ35 Maxima for significantly less. In all honesty, if you’re just a bit creative, there’s a whole lot better for the money than that Si.

That's not just the bumper out of whack. Hood doesn't line up, fender/headlight gap is crazy. No dice on this car.

I had a 2003 Si in 2003 and drove it for 2-3 years, from new. It was actually a very fun car - not the fastest unfortunately. It had decent room in the back with the seats down - I used to fit my road bike there. Seats were cool, and the weird shifter was actually about perfectly placed to be close to the steering wheel.

Can't comment on the potential issues of this particular example. You are guaranteed to have one of the rarest cats on the road though if you get it.

To me, that has more red flags than a Home Depot loading zone. It sounds like a hot mess the PO has tired of messing with and is covering the issues with excuses and “lost” paperwork. It might be a good platform if you have a full rebuild in mind, but not anywhere close to turn-key transportation. I could be just in a very jaded mood, but some other commenters have posted what appear to be much better alternatives. Good luck, though. Even in 2016 $3k should land you something you can use, enjoy, work on, and be proud of.

Here are a couple of other SI’s with working AC, and for less cash than that one.

There’s also this nice-looking Crown Vic !

If all you have is $3k to spend you need to find something that won’t bankrupt you after the purchase. That Honda sounds like a money pit.

A couple months ago I bought a rust free 05 Focus w/auto with 60k miles for $3k. The 05-07 Focus are basically bulletproof and will run 200k miles with out any problems plus no bullshit timing belt to replace. With a 5 speed the are a decently fun, tossable little car.

Honestly dude, you should probably not even call this guy back. This gen of Civic Si is almost guaranteed too have had an abusive ricer PO at some point in its history (the new engine being a huge red flag to how it’s been previously treated) and on top of that, it looks like this particular one has been wrecked judging by the paint and panel gaps on the hood and bumper. You can do a lot better than this for $3k.

Take it to your own mechanic to be inspected and if it checks out, offer $2500.

When you’re in the sub-$3000 territory, you’re not looking for cars in mint condition.

I’m with you. That’s a very sketchy history. It might be okay, probably isn’t.

Pathetic? $3000? That’s more than I’ve ever spent on a car. Man I’d be having a field day with a budget that high!

Really, $3,000 for an ‘05 Focus with 60K on it? I hope it had a salvage title and a blown motor.

Depending on the extent of the hail damage, this seems like a better call: http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/5750902701…

Also, someone else mentioned focuses; that’s a very good call for a low budget, try and find one with the 2.3l.

A focus with a blown motor is worth scrap.
